Delhi is the only state to shut down all of its thermal power plants.

-- Delhi's renewable fuel usage for electricity is at 33%
-- Target of installing 6,000 MW of solar capacity by 2025

Thermal Power Plant Shutdown

  • Delhi’s biggest power generator in Badarpur was shut down in October 2018
  • The Rajghat thermal power plant was shut down in May 2015 and was decided to use its land to develop a 5,000 KW solar park instead

Preference to Renewable Energy Supply

  • Discoms have power tie-ups for a total of 8,471MW, of which 33% i.e. around 2,826 MW is being sourced from renewable energy sources[1]
  • This primarily comprises of solar energy and wind energy, which contribute approximately 2,000MW to Delhi’s power supply[1:1]

Delhi Solar Policy

-- Delhi Government Aims to Generate 25% of Electricity Demand Through Solar Energy by 2025[2]
-- The new Solar policy has set a target of installing solar infrastructure with a capacity of 6,000 MW, including 750 MW of rooftop solar, by 2025[2:1]

  • Government of NCT of Delhi approved “Delhi Solar Policy-2016” on 27.09.2016 with the aim to install 2000 MW Solar installation by 2025.
  • Provision of solar installation in all buildings having plot area of 105 meter or above is mandatory as per Building Bylaws of Delhi.
  • Transmission charges are waived off for renewable power procurement, which encouraged discoms to purchase 350 MW of wind power from other states[3]
  • Incentives for rooftop solar installation [4]
    • Exemption from the payment of Electricity Tax and Cess
    • Exemption on Open Access Charges
    • Exemption from the conversion charges requirement of house tax to commercial tax.
    • Exemption on wheeling, banking, and transmission charges

  • While India's electricity consumption from renewable fuels hasn't increased much in the last 2 decades (2% to 3%)[6], Delhi's renewable fuel usage for electricity is at 33%[1:2]
  • Delhi to buy 350MW power from wind farms[3:1]
