-- Before AAP Govt, Max ~3 crore was spent by previous govts

Rs 176.29 crore worth Project for flood protection in Border areas[1]

Collection ponds being constructed to store Excess Flood Water
-- Also would help replenish ground water levels

1st Project: 20-acre & 40-foot-deep Large water reservoir being constructed at Ghaggar river in Chando village, Sangrur[2]

Infrastructure Strengthening

1. Large Water Reserviors to store Excess Flood Water

Check dams to be constructed stop the spillage of the flood water
-- These would help replenish ground water as well as save land from flooding

  • Punjab is constructing large water bodies
  • 9+ such bodies being constructed along the Ghaggar river[2:1]
  • 8 ponds identified in Derabasi sub-division; each of 20 acres[3]

2. Small Dams: 6 small dams are proposed on the Ghaggar river to control the flood[4]

3. Automated Canal Gates
The funds were used to eliminate the manual work by automation such as motorisation of gates of Sirhind canal flowing from Sutlej river[5]

4. Real time monitoring
Installed SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system on the gates of Sirhind canal for monitoring, controlling the equipments and analysing the data from the equipments

5. Research
A Study was constructed on Sutlej river near Chak Dhera village at a cost of Rs. 15.41 lakh, to identify measures, which will not erode the banks and protect surrounding residential areas and agricultural land from floods

6. Widening Ghaggar
Widening of river from 60 m to 90 m at some feasible points[6]

7. Limiting water-level rise of the Ghaggar River to 2 m at both banks by constructing embankment[6:1]

8. Border Area flood protection[1:1]

  • CM Mann has approved the project worth Rs 176.29 crore for flood protection around Border out Posts on international boundary fencing
  • The Project will include 29140 feet of Revetment, 22 spurs and 95 studs
  • Will protect 8695.27 hectres of land from floods
