Punjab 5th state to achieve 100% target of providing piped drinking water supply to all 34.26 lakh households[1]

Now AAP Govt is commited for delivering Canal/Surface water[2]

-- 15 Canal drinking water schemes covering 1,706 villages are expected to be completed in FY 2024-25 with total cost of ₹~2,200 crore[3]

The groundwater in Fazilka district is unfit for consumption leading to grave Health issues like Early grey hair, discoloured teeth, mental retardation, and skin ailments have been reported in many villagers[2:1]

Har ghar jal - Water in every household

Clean & Safe potable piped water is provided to 100% household in Punjab now[4]

  • The target of providing piped drinking water supply to all households was achieved in 2022 itself[4:1]
  • National target is to be achieved by 2024[4:2]

Surface/canal water to households

Underground water in many areas is not suitable for drinking. Punjab has a low underground water and prone to arsenic and lead contamination[5]

  • 15 surface water projects were underway in different areas of state. After their completion, 1,718 villages will get potatable water[6]

Ludhaina city’s canal-based drinking water

Previous Govts caused long wait of atleast a decade for city residents[7]
-- Depleting groundwater table by 0.5 to 1 meter every year[8]
-- Heavy metals and radioactive elements present in the groundwater affect health conditions of the city population[8:1]

150 litres per capita daily water supply is targetted[8:2]
-- To be completed within 3 years on design-build services (DBS) basis i.e. maintenance services included for the next 10 years as well

  • To provide canal water supply to ~18 lakh population of the city
  • Raw water source from a distributary from the Sidhwan canal[8:3]
  • Involved 137 overhead supply reservoirs (OHSRs) and 173-km-long transmission main lines[8:4]
  • 1st phase: comprising[8:5]
    -- Raw water system
    -- Water treatment plant which is to be built in Bilga village; ~55 acres of land has been purchased already
    -- Laying of 173-km-long transmission mainline of 150 mm to 2,000 mm
    -- Construction of 55 new Overhead supply reservoirs OHSRs
    -- Treated water pumping
  • 2nd phase[8:6]: there is a plan to
    -- Replace the damaged water supply lines in the old areas of the city
    -- House service connection with metering process
  • Letter of acceptance issued on 10 July 2024 to lowest bidder among 4 bidders[8:7]
  • The overall scheme cost of Rs 3,394.45-crore, including Rs 700 crore for 10 years of operation and maintenance[8:8]

Patiala city’s canal-based drinking water[9]

July 2024: ~72% work has been done and expected to to be completed by 31 December 2024

  • Punjab government has imposed a fine of ₹8.46 crore for delay on Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T)
  • The project includes a water treatment plant of 115 MLD (million litre per day), a water reservoir of 19.75 MLD besides storage and sedimentation tank of 236 MLD

Talwara project[10]

  • Will provide clean drinking water to 197 villages of Talwara, Hajipur, Bhunga and Dasuya blocks
  • The project is scheduled to be completed by 2025
  • Pipeline of about 231 km length is being laid from Shah Canal Barrage
  • Total cost of the project is Rs 258.73 crore
  • After the completion of the project, the drinking water problem of the people of Kandi area to get resolved

Fazilka border villages Project[2:2]

  • Total 205 villages covered under this surface water project
  • Looking at the presence of heavy metals in the groundwater, the project was planned in March 2022 and expected in complete in March 2025
  • The Rs 185.72-crore project to provide surface water to 205 border villages in Fazilka district, which has reported the presence of uranium in the groundwater
  • People are drinking the reverse osmosis ( RO)-treated groundwater which is safe for drinking, but the surface water option will be given to the consumers
