March 2022: Delhi's Mountains of legacy waste across 3 landfill sites in Ghazipur, Okhla and Bhalswa ^[1]

TARGET: Clearing Delhi’s garbage mountains was the first of the 10 AAP Guarantees for MCD^[2]

38.73% of Legacy Garbage Waste successfully disposed(till 30 Nov 2023)^[3]

¶ The Problem

Estimated 450Cr in ecological damage caused by these 3 dumpsites^[4]

• Landfills are site of frequent fires i.e. Toxic/Carcinogenic gases impacting lives of people living nearby^[5]

Target to clear Okhla by December 2023, Bhalswa by March 2024, and Ghazipur by December 2024^[2:1]

10.84mn of the total 28mn legacy waste cleared till Nov'23^[3:1]

• 58 trommel machines deployed for clearing the legacy waste^[3:2]

¶ Further plans

• 2 more agencies to be added to expedite clearance at Ghazipur landfill, but project approvals stuck due to Standing Commitee logjam^[7]
• Work to hopefully expedite after recent transfer of powers of Standing committee to the MCD house^[8]
