Uncertain future for sportsperson[1]:
If sportsperson is not able to establish a career in sports, he remains just a School Pass-out; unable to get a job because of minimum graduation degree eligibility

“The share of jobs under sports quota is also limited. We are hoping to eradicate that uncertainty from the minds of sportspersons” - Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia[1:1]

"The degree focussed in sports will also make the players eligible for government jobs including civil services" - Delhi CM Mr Arvind Kejriwal[1:2]

Objective

"DSU will scout sports talent from the grassroots and nurture them to build sports champions in India" - Padma Shri K Malleswari (India’s first woman Olympic Medallist) as first Vice Chancellor, DSU[2]

  • Sports career integrated Degree Courses: Awarding degrees based on curriculum focussed on sports careers and show that sports is also a form of education[1:3]

“Education and sports have always been considered separately and sports was considered as just an option. This is the reason why, despite having such a large population, we lag behind in the medal tally at the Olympics” - Ms. Atishi[3]

  • Advanced Scientific processes to enhance performance: A sports science centre and an athletic monitoring system will be developed where continuous scientific evaluation will be done and corrective measures taken[4]
  • Strengthening the grassroots system and nurturing potential athletes: Through the national talent scouting drive we will be able to contribute to the ecosystem of sports in India[5]

Features & Facilities[6]

  • DSU offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees in various sports on a par with other educational disciplines[7]
  • Currently temporarily functioning from the Civil Lines area

CAMPUS:
-- 79 acres campus with budget of 1000 crores to be built, will be able to accommodate ~3,000 students
-- There will be residential facilities for students in a 20-storey building
-- State-of-the-art outdoor and indoor facilities

Outdoor facilities[8]

  • 2 Football grounds
  • 2 Athletics tracks with practice pitches of 125 mtrs on each side
  • 2 Volleyball courts
  • 2 Basketball courts
  • 50 Mtrs Shooting Arena
  • Archery field
  • Hockey turf
  • Lawn tennis Court — 3 synthetic, 3 clay
  • Space for recreational activities (open amphitheatre)

Indoor facilities[8:1]

  • One Indoor Hall with height of about 10-12 mtrs having following facilities:
    • 8-10 Court For Badminton
    • 1 Volleyball court
    • 1 Basketball court
  • Aquatic centre with 4 all-weather practice pools (half Olympic size), 1 Olympic Size swimming pool and 1 diving pool with adequate number of steam & sauna stations
  • One multi-storey indoor hall of Wrestling, Weightlifting, Boxing with Gym facility
  • Gymnastics sports & Fencing
  • One multi-storey indoor hall for Taekwando, Chess, Kabaddi & Table tennis (16 tables)
  • Indoor shooting range of 10 mtrs & 25 mtrs
  • Grassy and sand jogging track with hill terrain along the periphery of the boundary wall of university campus
  • All sports facilities shall be equipped with changing rooms, washrooms, coach rooms, store room

International Collaborations[9]

Delhi Sports University signed a MoU with the University of East London in the presence of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal

  • The University of East London (UEL) will work with DSU to design a sporting programme and provide academic support to create advanced world-class training for athletes
  • The memorandum aims to build cooperation between both the universities in exchange of knowledge, research and innovation opportunities in the fields of sports science and staff and student exchange
