Teacher training budget has increased 1400% from Rs 7.4 Crores in 2014-15[1] to Rs 100 Crores[2] in 2024-25

Various programs launched by the Delhi Government[6]

The aim of these a first of its kind trainings is to train the educators in the best practices of education to enhance student learning in their own schools

  • Principal Development Program: Aimed to help Heads of Schools have a wider learning experience and strengthen leadership through in-house sessions and international exposure.

  • Mentor Teacher Program: Mentor teachers provide on-site support to teachers and have been trained at both national and international levels.

  • Teacher Development Coordinator Program: An in-school support program for the improvement of classroom practices and student learning.

  • Special Educator's Training Program: Aimed to equip teachers to deal with with various learning disabilities and develop Individualized education plans (IEPs) according to the need of the student

  1. Delhi Teachers’University (DTU)

‘Shikshak ke Dum pe Shiksha, Shiksha ke Dum par Desh’

DTU envisages to be the 1st University in the country to meet the requirements of teacher training as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020[8]

  1. SCERT (State council of Education Research and Training)

Since 2016,SCERT with the support of DoE has been conducting leadership programmes at different levels:[9]

  • Cluster leadership development programme (CLDP)
    Conducted monthly, in collaboration with Creatnet Education, focuses on peer learning and leadership development of Heads of Schools.
  • Primary Leadership Development Programme (PLDP):
    The PLDP program is a continuous learning program by SCERT for leadership development of Principals in the Department of Education, Delhi.[10]
  • Leadership for excellence in education
    This programme is an initiative by SCERT and DoE (Department of Education)to enhance leadership ability of heads of schools.
  • Inspiring leadership improving performance
    SCERT partnered with Judge Business School,the Cambridge University,UK for capacity building of Heads of Schools under DoE. By 2020,12 batches of 353 Principals and senior faculty members of SCERT and DIET had been trained.

SCERT has also been conducting capacity buiding programs for teachers in premier institutioms across India like TISS Mumbai,IIT Mandi and to various cities around the country like Sikkim,Odisha,Hyderabad,Bangalore,Vizag etc [10:1]

  1. DIET (District Institutes of Education and Training)

DIET has succesfully managed the Teacher Development Coordinator (TDC) Programme since 2017.This programme has been developed in partnership with STiR Education and aims to create a collaborative network of senior teachers to develop "Education leader' within each school.[9:1]

Apart from the above mentioned programmes various types of professional development trainings for different levels of teachers are imparted by these agencies throughout the year.

  1. Department of Education (DoE)

A group of 200 mentor teachers from DoE,experienced in teaching upper primary or secondary grade children serve as Academic Resource Group of the Directorate of Education.

The DoE partnered with 11 NGOs (working in the area of special education and recognized by the Government of India) to train 764 special educators of Delhi Government schools.

Impact of the trainings[6:1]

  • Increased sense of ownership and responsibility amongst the HoS to develop their schools as centres of learning.
  • The International exposure visits helped in enhancing the skills of observation, facilitation, content understanding and pedagogical skills.
  • Training given to special education teachers equipped them to work across disabilities and develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students according to their special needs.
