Water Treatment Plants(WTPs) process Raw Water sources to supply potable water for Delhi
May 2024: 9 plants produced 867.36 MGD against an installed capacity of 821 MGD[1]
¶ WTPs[2][3]
3 new WTPs were commissioned in 2015 at Dwarka (50 MGD), Bawana(20 MGD) and Okhla (20 MGD)

¶ Ammonia Removal Plant
Goal: Reducing ammonia levels in yamuna water from 6ppm to treatable limits
Problem & Current Status[4]

DJB’s plants can treat up to 1ppm of ammonia in raw water through chlorination

Whenever ammonia levels breach the 1ppm mark due to large amounts of ammonia and industrial waste released by Haryana, water production at Delhi Jal Board treatment plants is hit

Several areas in north, central and south Delhi facing water supply issues due to this
This happens 15-20 times every year and in some instances the ammonia levels increase to 10 times the the maximum treatable limit
Plan: In-situ ammonia treatment in Wazirabad Pond[5]
- Over 235 MGD is supplied by Chandrawal and Wazirabad plants both of which draw water from Wazirabad pond fed by raw water from the Yamuna
- The plant will be set up at the Wazirabad WTP, where the treated water will be purified
- March 2023: CM Arvind Kejriwal ordered the implementation of an in-situ treatment project and the project was supposed to be implemented within 4-6 months
Dec 2023: But the project has not been started even after nine months
- Water Minister has instructed the Chief Secretary to report on the delays in the Delhi Jal Board's ammonia treatment project
Pilot Projects[6]
- Shakarpur ranney well in December 2018 where a smaller version of the same technology was used in a 10KLD ammonia removal plant, which showed encouraging results
- 1st ammonia removal plant with a capacity to treat 1 MGD made operational in a ranney well near Vikas Marg
¶ DETAILS
¶ 1. Nangloi Water Plant (40 MGD)
- Nangloi Water Treatment Plant is maintained by NWS (Nangloi Water Services Pvt Ltd) which is a joint venture company setup by Veolia Water India and its local partner, Swach Environment.[7]
- It has been awarded 15 years contract based on public private partnership (ppp) model from Delhi Jal Board since September 2013.[7:1]
- The Nangloi plant has a capacity to supply 40 MGD water but it operates at 44 MGD levels above its capacity. [8]
- 09Oct2022: Nangloi plant currently has 16 filter beds. Delhi Jal Board approved Rs 59.7 crore project to increase the capacity of Nangloi water treatment plant by upgrading its filter beds. The repair work done by construction with cement and sand does not last very long, so the DJB has decided to build a new filter house. The new filter house will be equipped with modern technology will be designed in such a way that it will treat about 10-15 percent more water.[8:1]
- It supplies water to the areas including Kudna Kamruddin Nagar, Nihal Vihar, Ranholla village, Bakkarwala, Nangloi JJC and camps, Jwalapuri, Rajdhani park, Friends Enclave, Kavita colony, Mohan Garden, Vikas Nagar, Uttam nagar, Matiala area, Hastsal, Dichaon Kalan and Jhroda village.[9]
- Other areas are Sainik Enclave, Badusrai, Daulatpur, Hasan Pur, Kharkhari, Jhuljuli Ujwa Rawta, Samaspur, Jaffar Pur Kalan, Khera Dabar, Malikpur, Mundhela Khurd and Dhansa.[9:1]
¶ 2. Haiderpur 1 & 2 WTP (200 MGD)

- Haiderpur Water Treatment plant is the single largest plant in Asia with a capacity of 200 MGD. It has two independent treatment plants of 100 MGD each.[10]
- Raw water is drawn from two sources, viz. the Western Jamuna Canal (WJC) and the Bhakra Storage.[10:1]
- Western Jamuna Canal (WJC): – It originates from Hathinikund / Tajewala Head Works, upstream Yamuna Nagar and then passes through Karnal, Munak, Panipat, Khubru, Kakroi and Bawana to Haiderpur Water Works.[10:2]
- Bhakra Storage: Delhi Jal Board receives water from Bhakra Storage through Bhakra Nangal canal which joins WJC near Karnal.[10:3]
- It serves area such as Pitampura, Shalimar bagh, Saraswati vihar, Paschim vihar, Raja Garden, Jawala Heri, Ramesh Nagar and North West Delhi. This is approximately equivalent to serving around 18 Lakh of population.[10:4]
- It has a common laboratory in the waterworks.[10:5]
- Spread across 100 acre land, Haiderpur WTP houses a recycle plant which produces 16 MGD extra treated water out of its wastage from different units.[11]
- After introducing new technologies, currently Haiderpur WTP produces record 240 MGD[11:1]
- 25May2023: Water minister Saurabh Bhardwaj announced to create an artificial lake on 2.2 acre land for storing clean water from this wtp to mitigate the wastage of pristine water from drain. This lake would have a depth of 6 meters and capacity 1.1 MG. This will improve ground water level too.[11:2]
¶ 3. Wazirabad WTP (120 MGD)
- One of Delhi's oldest water treatment plants, has capacity of 120 MGD and a recycling unit inside its complex produces 11MGD water.[12]
- It supplies water to President Estate, Civil Lines, Karol Bagh, Paharganj, Patel Nagar, Shadipur, Timar Pur Malka Ganj, Azad Market, Rajender Nagar, NDMC area, Ramlila Ground, Delhi gate, Subhash Park, Daryaganj, Gulabi Bagh, Jahangir Puri, APMC, Kewal Park, NDMC and adjoining areas.[13]
- According to the Bureau of Indian Standards, the acceptable maximum limit of ammonia in drinking water is 0.5 ppm. At present, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has the capacity to treat 0.9 ppm, though ammonia present in wazirabad pond reaches to 5ppm sometimes[14]
Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okha Plants remain shutdown on regular basis whenever Water from Haryana has continuous discharge of pollutants in the river
- AAP government is taking steps to address rising ammonia levels by planning to install an insitu ammonia treatment system[15]
¶ 4. Chandrawal WTP (90 MGD)
Chandrawal WTP was constructed in two phases earlier in the year 1930 (35 MGD) and 1960 (55 MGD)[16]
- It supplies water to NDMC Area of Delhi[17]
- 29May2019: New additional Drinking Water Treatment Plant (WTP) at Chandrawal has been approved by Delhi Jal Board (DJB) in its 146th meeting held under under the chairmanship of Arvind Kejriwal Chief Minister Delhi and Chairman DJB as per DJB’s press release[17:1]
- The board gave approval for construction of an additional WTP of (106 MGD) capacity. The expected cost of the plant is about Rs. 598 Cr[17:2]
- This plant shall cater to 22 lakh residents of various areas such as Civil Lines, Karol Bagh, Rajender Nagar, Naraina, Delhi Cantonment area partly, NDMC areas, Chandni Chowk etc[17:3]

¶ 5. Okhla WTP (20 MGD)

It supplies water in Narela and Sultanpur Area[18]
¶ 7. Dwarka WTP (40 MGD)
- Dwarka WTP inaugurated in 2015, receives water from Munak Canal[19]
- 13July2021: Satyendra jain has directed to increase its capacity upto (70 MGD). A lake is planned to be built inside across an area of 10 acre land to increase waterlevels[19:1]
- Additional new WTP at Dwarka project work started on 8th July 2021. The new WTP will have capacity of (106 MGD). This will take 56 MGD water supply from corronation plant STP and rest 50-60 MGD water is expected to be received from Himachal Pradesh. The new wtp will cost Rs 280 Crore [19:2]
¶ 8. Sonia Vihar WTP (140 MGD)
Sonia Vihar is the most advanced wtp that supplies Ganga Water to more than 15% population of Delhi[20]
- October 2023: Officials from UNICEF, WHO and Central Government visited sonia vihar wtp. They were briefed about water purification process and lab tests[21]
¶ 9. Bhagirathi WTP (110 MGD)
- Bhagirathi WTP was designed and commissioned in 1983. It provides quality potable water 24x7 to entire east Delhi covering a population of 40 lakhs.[22]
- Earlier being manually operated, it was not flexible and did not allow DJB to react quickly to variation in water demand. So entire Bhagirathi WTP was handed over to L&T Construction for rehabilitation and automation, with one year defect liability and 10 years of operation and maintenance[22:1]
- Now DJB is able to monitor the entire operation and performance of equipment in real time with help of iVisionmax SCADA implementation. It provides visibility and early awareness of potential problems, which has averted critical issues in several cases[22:2]
- 11Oct2022: The Delhi government has decided to replace the 40 year old water pipeline of Bhagirathi Pant. With replacement of 20 km long pipeline, 130 MGD of Ganga water will be supplied to lakhs of people in East Delhi[23]
