Green Inititatives by Delhi MCD: Tree ambulances, AI tree census and Mini Forests

With tree ambulances, AI-based tree census, green waste management and afforestation, Delhi is on course to become green and clean like European cities

Tree ambulances[1]

MCD has 3x its fleet of tree ambulances to 12 in Horticulture department[2]

2023: 353 Tree surgeries conducted by 4 ambulances

  • A tree ambulance is a vehicle used to treat trees with diseases, termite infestations or tilting
  • The ambulance carries pesticides, fungicides and insecticides, and is equipped with a pipe and a ladder
  • Ensuring a dedicated vehicle for each of its 12 administrative zones
  • MCD to further set-up dedicated surgery units with specialised arborists to safeguard city's trees [2:1]

AI-based tree census [3]

Tree census to be conducted in all the wards of Delhi to enable targeted plantations in MCD wards, and check illegal cutting of trees

  • Census conducted to record the number of trees, their age, health, and conditions
  • First round of census: To be done manually
  • Second round to be AI-based survey and geo-tagging

Mini Forests

Total mini-forests to increase to 24 with these 10 parks

Green waste management

  • MCD planning to increase the number of Green waste management centres to 52[5]
  • New green waste management centres to help achieve 100 per cent composting of organic waste
  • Removing the need to buy compost while checking pollution [5:1]
