Fixing Car parking issues in Delhi by AAP MCD Government

Problem: 1700+ illegal parking slots running in the capital

Initiatives by MCD under AAP
-- Acquisition of illegal parking zones
-- New multi-level parkings under construction
-- FasTag/RFID tagging systems for transparency & convenience
-- Strict & Systematic enforcement: Private operators to toe illegally parked vehicles

Now 423 parking spots under the control of Delhi MCD as 19 May 2024[1]
-- 55 New Parking spots opened in 1 year under AAP

The Problem

  • At present, MCD has estimated parking space for only 51,000 vehicles[2]
  • 1700 illegal parking spaces being operated by Mafias, compared to 423 legal parking spots[3]
  • Illegal parking causing traffic congestion in busy markets like Chandani Chowk [4]

New Initiatives by MCD under AAP

Increased parking slots[2:1]

  • 66 parking spaces, including 32 new spaces to be tendered, creating parking for 2500+ vehicles
  • 40 allotments already done as of December 2023[5]

Total parking spaces under MCD to increase to 500, revenue increase by ₹43 Cr

Under construction parking spaces

  • Newly-built automated 3-level car parking in Lajpat Nagar to be ready soon[6]
  • 6-floor parking space built under PPP model in Chandani Chowk, to accommodate 2300 vehicles [7]
  • Fresh attempt to revive two old multi-level parking projects [8]

Strict & Systematic enforcement[9]

  • Illegal parking spaces to be closed or brought under the ambit of Delhi MCD - to increase MCD revenue by ₹200 Cr[3:1]

Private operators to be given the right to toe away illegally parked vehicles

  • Heavy removal and storage charges, ranging from ₹300 to ₹2,000, depending on the weight of the vehicle
  • Concessionaires to be able to deploy “intelligent tow trucks” equipped with cameras to tow away illegally parked vehicles
  • Information of towed vehicles to be made immediately available on MCD app and website

FasTag online payment[1:1]

  • RFID tags already installed in 50+ parking spaces for collecting fees via FasTags
  • Unprecedent increase in FasTag parking will be achieved this year
