Historically No MSP support by Govt for Moong like many other crops

Season 2023-24[1]

  • Budget 2023-34: Rs 125 crore was allocated for Procurement of Moongi at MSP and the Direct Seeding of Rice[2]
  • The area under summer moong or green gram has shrunk to 21,000 hectares from 52,000 hectares in 2022
  • The area dropped due to delayed wheat harvesting and severe loss of production of cotton in 2022 due to moong
  • Moong/Green gram is a host plant of the deadly whitefly that attacks cotton crop
  • Hence it was recommended this time to not be sown in the southwest Punjab districts, the cotton belt of Punjab

Season 2022-23[3]

  • The Punjab government for the first time introduced a policy to procure summer moong on MSP of Rs 7,275 per quintal

Gap Funding

  • For private buying below MSP, Govt paid the difference between purchase price and the MSP with Rs 1,000/ quintal as the upper limit
  • 79 crores transferred for this gap funding, benefitting 20,898 farmers[2:1]

Around 4 lakh quintals moong is expected to be produced in Punjab and against 2.98 lakh quintals last year
