'Mission Sanjha Jal Talab’ project: Government has set a target of renovating 150 ponds in every district

Rs 53 lakh earned from renovated 49 ponds in just Sangrur district for panchayats of respective villages in last 1 year as of January 2024

Renovation of ponds carried out in Punjab under ‘Mission Sanjha Jal Talab’

  • Only large ponds with an area of at least 1 acre and a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters of water to be taken under this project
  • 2022-23: 883 ponds have been renovated by the department through Seechewal and Thapar models[1]
  • Jan 2023: Total of 1,862 ponds in the state had been identified under the mission
    • Work had been started on 1,026 ponds
    • Work Completed on 504 ponds
    • Work is underway at 522 projects

Impact: Revenue Generation[2]

After renovation, these ponds were being given on lease with the assistance of Fisheries department

  • First of all the dirty water of the ponds would be drained out
  • Then the ponds are de-silted, to increase depth along with strengthening the embankments
  • Then given on lease through open bidding system
  • Boosting the revenue of the panchayats from leased ponds
  • The people of the villages are also getting relief from dirty water which was the source of pollution and diseases
  • To improve the appearance of these ponds, Government is planning to prepare walking track on the banks of ponds and plant flowers & saplings
