EWS Flats of Delhi for Rohingyas

Delhi AAP Govt has taken a hostile view to the prospect of settling Rohingya Muslims in flats reserved for the economically weaker segment of the population[2:1]

In August 2022, BJP Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said in a tweet that Rohingyas refugees will be shifted to small EWS flats in Bakkarwala area of Delhi[4][5]

AAP government on financial aid to them

No financial aid provided by AAP Govt

  • The AAP government only provided adequate ration to Rohingya families at 3 camps in south and north east parts of the city during the coronavirus-induced lockdown[6]

Rohingyas in India

During BJP government, Rohingya's population has increased 4 times in India in just 2 years just from 2015-2017[7]

  • Illegal Rohingya immigrants are staying in 12 states and UTs, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu[8]
  • Around 10000-11000 Rohingya have been living in Jammu after arriving in the city between 2012 to 2017, which is ruled by BJP[9][7:1]

The Central government led by BJP and Congress provided financial aid to Rohingyas

  • In September 2017, Government of India provided assistance to Bangladesh to tackle Rohingya crisis The relief material consisted of items required urgently by the affected people, namely rice, pulses, sugar, salt, cooking oil, tea, ready to eat noodles, biscuits, mosquito nets etc under operation Insaniyat[10]
  • The relief material was delivered in multiple consignments, the first tranche of which was brought to Chittagong by an Indian Air Force plane on 14th September 2017[10:1]
  • In 2017, BJP governemnt provided Myanmar with $25 million for development projects including prefabricated houses in troubled Rakhine state to enable the return of Rohingya Muslims who have fled the area[11]
  • In 2012, Indian Congress government contributed $1 mn for violence-hit Mynamar state[12][13]
  • Central government has no plan to deport the Rohingyas[3:1]

Who are Rohingyas?

  • The Rohingya are a predominantly Muslim ethnic minority who have lived in Myanmar for 100s of years
  • Denied citizenship by Myanmar’s government, they are stateless and face particular challenges obtaining access to health care and other basic rights[14]
