3 new 800 MW supercritical thermal plants coming up in Punjab[1]
-- 2 plants will come up in Govt plant in Ropar
-- 3rd will be set up by a private player

Punjab lost 880 MW capacity under Congress govt
-- 4 units of Bathinda's Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant (GNDTP)
-- 2 units of Ropar's Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Plant

Shocking decision
-- Costly renovation & modernisation was already done for life extension of these units upto 2029
-- The decision to shut them contradicted Central Electricity guidelines
-- Retired in Jan 2018

Current Thermal Capacity[1:1]

Public vs Private

Sector Capacity
Public 2,300 MW 1 acquired from Private
Private 3,380 MW

Plants

Plant Capacity
GHTP, Lehra Mohabbat 920MW Public
GGSSTP, Ropar 840 MW Public
GATP (formerly GVK), Goindwal Sahib 540 MW Public
NPL, Rajpura 1,400 MW Private
TSPL 1,980 MW Private

Importance of functional Coal Mine[1:2]

Punjab's coal mine is under-utilised and availability of land, water and railway lines in Ropar played crucial role to get approval

Earlier, the Union government was averse to setting up power plants 1,000km away from the pit head of the coal mine due to the huge cost involved in transportation
