Punjab has only 12 medical colleges
-- 4 government, 6 privates, 1 PPP mode and 1 Centre-run
-- Total only 1,750 MBBS seats (800 government & 950 private)

1. Mohali: Dr BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences[2][3]

AAP Govt replanned & redesigned this project due to poor planning
-- Shifted Medical College to a new location as existing site in Phase 6 had inadequate land; only 10-acre land available for its future expansion
-- Current hospital to be upgraded to meet the region’s requirements, avoiding mammoth expenditure in shifting

AAP government allotted 28-acre vacant land for Medical College in Sector 81, with additional 25 acres for future expansion
-- The total budget for the entire project amounts to approximately ₹1000 crore
-- Construction to start in December

  • Started functioning in May 2022 with first MBBS batch of 100 students
  • Running from an existing hospital building with plans to shift the hospital to another location

2. Patiala[4]

-- Increased number of seats from 150 to 225[5][6]
-- Upgraded Emergency ward: The capacity of beds doubled to 100

  • Trauma centre to be set up at Rajindra Hospital at a cost of ₹68.74 crore
  • Additional residential facilities for Doctors, Students & other staff approved at the cost of ~125 crores

3. Amritsar

AAP Govt increased number of seats from 150 to 250 seats[5:1][6:1]

  • The college was initially started as a medical school in Lahore in 1864, later shifted to Amritsar in 1920.The school was upgraded to a medical college in 1943

  • The college spread over 165 acres

  • November 2023: CM Mann inaugurated e-Hospital project, new Radiation therapy block, OPD block and OT complex in State Cancer Institute and multiple residential facilities along with auditorium in the hospital[7]

4. Faridkot: Guru Gobind Singh Medical College[6:2]

25 more MBBS seats added, taking total to 150 seats in Feb 2023

  • The GGSMCH was established in 1973 with a capacity of 50 MBBS seats
  • Only government medical college in Punjab offering MCH plastic surgery super-speciality course
